Call sign "Sailor"

There are poetic lines that almost immediately go viral. One of them is the poem Headquarters, which has already circulated in numerous video and audio recordings. Ukrainians read and share it because it is not only about the war but also about the dreams of those who defend Ukraine with arms in their hands.

Escaping into dreams, we come back stronger

Dreams as a way to escape from reality are a temporary way to distract yourself. However, dreams can also give you the strength to recover. Dreams are a tuning fork that sets you up for the future.

"I am afraid of my dream-less-self"

A year after the start of the full-scale war, the woman returned to the question, "Do I dream? Have I lost the ability to dream? And is it timely to dream?" She notes that some dreams have changed but still come true even when we don't recognize it.

Happy Memories of the Past Do Not Equal Nostalgia

“I wish and believe that one day soon, we’ll meet and make pilaf, without ever looking at the clock. We’ll be recalling our stage performances, sharing stories, and laughing till we cry, all of this in a free country where air ride sirens never go off”

Oleksiy Rubtsov, a 40-year-old experienced fighter of the "Azov" regiment who had already fought during the ATO, was supposed to run the marathon in London but once again took up arms when the Russian army invaded Ukraine. He was killed on September 18, 2022, in the Bahmut district under the pseudonym "Soldier", and his body has not been retrieved from the occupied Donetsk region. Instead of him, his wife Irina Rubtsova ran the London Marathon, dedicating her first marathon to her heroic husband.

Liosha was selected for the national team of wounded soldiers to run in the US Marine Corps Marathon back in the pre-COVID days, in 2018. It's a tough marathon, one of the most prestigious for military personnel worldwide. But then COVID started, and the marathon was postponed. Then they postponed it again.

According to Irina, in 2021, the selection for the Ukrainian We are Invictus Team was held in Kyiv. "Soldier" passed it and was supposed to run the Berlin Marathon in the fall of 2022. But on February 24 — the big war, and Oleksiy Rubtsov was back in action.

Liosha understood that he wouldn't be able to go to Berlin because he was in the trenches with a rifle in Donetsk. So, in advance, he asked the organizers to transfer his participation from October 2022 to April 2023 for the London Marathon. They understood and agreed. And then September came, Liosha was killed…

The British organizers of the Invictus Team offered Irina to run the marathon instead of her deceased husband. She hesitated at first, but eventually agreed.

I wasn't sure, but my friends and Liosha's comrades supported me, said that I must definitely run this marathon, as Liosha dreamed of it. After hearing about the death of my beloved, my children — son Myroslav and daughter Polina — helped me not to lose heart. And I ran. If it weren't for sports, I would have definitely fallen into deep depression.

Irina prepared for the marathon for 6 months, training 4 times a week with professional coach Andriy Pavelko.

Irina Rubtsova completed the marathon distance in London in 4 hours. For the last 3 kilometers, she ran under the flag with the names of "Azov", "Carpathian Sich", and other heroes who gave their lives defending Ukraine from the Russian onslaught. As well as those who are currently in Russian captivity.

In peacetime, the Rubtsovs set themselves the goal of running all six of the world's most famous marathons — the so-called Majors. Irina's dream of realizing their dream of the first marathon medal has already come true.
